As with any other pet health trend, when it comes to CBD oil for dogs, there is a lot of information on the internet. Of course, you want to do what works best for your puppy, which leads to the question: What do I need to know about CBD oil?
Dr. Jerry Klein, AKC's chief veterinary officer, explains what CBD oil is, what it does, safety concerns, and side effects.
What is CBD Oil?
Biodiversity or cannabidiol is a compound found in cannabis and hemp. Dr. Klein says it should be noted that in most cases, CBD oil does not contain delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the compound that gives marijuana its psychoactive properties. In fact, most CBD products are derived from cannabis, not marijuana.
How does CBD affect dogs?
There is currently no official study on how CBD affects dogs. Scientists know that cannabinoids interact with endocannabinoid receptors in the central and peripheral nervous system, which helps maintain balance in the body and keep it in a normal healthy state.
What dog health problems can be treated with CBD oil?
Although there is no definitive scientific data on the use of CBD for treating dogs, there is anecdotal evidence from dog owners indicating that it can treat pain, especially nerve pain, as well as help control seizures.
According to Dr. Klein, CBD is also used because of its anti-inflammatory properties, cardiac benefits, anti-nausea effects, appetite stimulation, anti-anxiety effect, and potential anti-cancer benefits, although there is no definitive data on this use.
The AKC Canine Health Foundation (CHF) is sponsoring a study through the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at the University of Colorado that will evaluate the use of CBD in treatment-resistant dogs. CHF hopes this will be the first study to provide scientific evidence on the use of CBD in dogs with the condition.
Possible side effects of CBD in dogs
Although there is no scientific data on the side effects of using CBD for dogs, there are potential side effects depending on how CBD affects humans. To minimize any possible side effects, be sure to follow the appropriate dosage.
* Dry mouth:
Studies have shown that CBD can reduce saliva production. For dogs, this can be an increased thirst.
Low blood pressure: High doses of CBD are known to cause a temporary drop in blood pressure. Although the drop is small, it can briefly create the feeling of a light head.
Drowsiness:
Dog owners have used CBD to treat anxiety. The sedative effect of CBD can also cause mild drowsiness, especially when using higher doses.
Dangers of Using CBD Oil for Dogs
The safety and risks of using CBD for dogs have not yet been investigated. Management on sanitary inspection behind quality of foodstuff and medicines of the USA has not endorsed the CBD and have not released a chart of dosing. So we don't know what dose will be toxic. Any drug or supplement can cause a reaction. It is always recommended that when giving a dog something new, start with small doses, and then carefully monitor the consequences. Always consult a veterinarian first.
CBD products on the market
If you and your veterinarian decide that you should try CBD as a treatment for your dog, there are a few things to consider when buying CBD oil. Not all oils are the same; then you want high-quality CBD oil to have a better chance of working out.
* Search for membership. If CBD oil is inorganic, it must contain at least pesticides, fungicides, or solvents.
* Don't shop for price alone. Higher quality and purity are usually associated with higher cost. The cheapest option may contain toxic substances such as pesticides, herbicides, or heavy metals. Make sure your CBD oil is free of additives.
* Get an analysis.
The manufacturer must provide a certificate confirming the amount of CBD contained in the product. Many CBD products contain only a small amount of CBD. You also need to make sure that there is little or no THC in the product.
* Buy CBD as a liquid.
You can buy dog treats that contain CBD, but the best form of intake is oil or tincture. This way you can adjust the dose for your dog drop by drop.
CBD Wellness Trend
Why are we hearing so much about CBD oil now?
Dr. Klein points to the legalization of marijuana in many places, which raises interest in the potential health benefits of marijuana-related products. "It is likely that in the coming years we will see continued interest in CBD and an increase in research on its use and effectiveness," he says.
